Fed: Latest figures on indigenous death rates
Latest figures on indigenous death rates, from the Australian Bureau of Statistics:
* 2,100 indigenous deaths recorded in 2000, eight per cent above 1999 levels.
* Death rate of 15 per 1,000, more than twice the rate of the total population, at six per 1,000.
* 19 per 1,000 indigenous males dying, 49 per cent higher than indigenous women, at 12 per 1,000.
* Median age at death for indigenous people 53 years, compared with 78 for the total population.
* Infant mortality rate for indigenous people 14 per 1,000, more than twice the total
population rate of 5 per 1,000.
