NSW: Two injured as car hits train engine

A woman and her seven-year-old son have been seriously injured in a collision between
their car hit and a train near Parkes in central New South Wales.

Police say the accident happened at a level crossing when the woman's sedan hit the
train's lead engine.

The boy is suffering from head injuries while his mother, aged in her 30s, has head
and chest injuries.

Both have been taken to Parkes Hospital but they may be transferred to a larger centre
later today.

A police spokeswoman says the crossing has a stop sign but no boom gates or warning lights.
